Ponza

Ponza is the largest of the Pontine Islands (the archipelago which includes the islands of Gavi, Zannone, Palmarola, Ventotene and Santo Stefano) and is located in the Gulf of Gaeta (in the Tyrrhenian Sea) 21 nautical miles south of San Felice Circeo.

Ponza has an area of 7.5 square kilometers and is almost completely hilly, dominated in the middle by the mountains: Core (201 m), Tre Venti (177 m) and Pagliaro (177 m), reaches its maximum altitude of 280 m of Mt. Guardia, located at the southern end of the island.

Famous are also the cliffs and stacks of Lucia Rosa, named after the protagonist of a tragedy really happened in the nineteenth century. Lucia Rosa was a young woman of nineteen, in love with a poor farmer but prevented from marrying for the opposition of the family: the girl, in despair, committed suicide by jumping from high cliffs, which was renamed in his name by the inhabitants place.
